Choose the Right Jewellery for a Gift

Giving Jewellery as a gift for special occasions is a time-honoured tradition that never fails to delight. If you do your proper homework there are plenty of options out there for choosing the right jewellery gift.  I want to take a moment now, before mothers day – craze kicks in and try to give a little helpful advice on how to choose the right Jewellery for your friend or loved one this gifting month for mothers. Check out this advice and we promise to steer you in the right direction!

The main things to keep in mind when shopping solo for a jewelry gift are:

Occasion– If she doesn’t go to fancy special events often there is no point in buying a piece she wont be able to wear except once in a blue moon. We ladies love to wear our jewellery!

Special Meaning/Symbolism– Selecting something symbolic of an occasion or relationship can add another layer of value to your gift.

Focus on HER– Just because you like it doesn’t mean that she will. Pay attention to what she likes to look at when out shopping together or by taking note on what she wears in her daily life. Scope out her Jewellery box if you can do it without being creepy!

Check With Her Friends – We ladies know what our friends like to wear. Ask to send a few pictures of pieces you are considering buying just to make sure you are on the right track.

Here are a series of questions I ask my customers that you can use to help hone in on some options:

  • Are you looking for something that she can wear everyday or on special occasions?
  • Does she tend to wear Yellow Gold or Silver/White Gold pieces?
  • Does she like dainty, understated jewellery OR bolder statement-making pieces?
  • Does she have an outgoing fashion style or reserved/tailored style?
  • Earrings: does she wear studs or big dangle earrings?
  • Rings: Do you know her size, or if not, can the ring be resized or exchange to fit her?

If you follow the advice here though we think your gift will be a big hit!

Mother’s Day Gifts For New Moms

Pregnancy and motherhood
are the most beautiful and significantly
life-altering events that I have ever experienced.
~Elisabeth Hasselbeck

Being a new mom brings so many life changes. From sleepless nights to first giggles, motherhood is certainly an adventure. Therefore, when Mother’s Day rolls around, new mom’s particularly deserve a special gift. Here are a few ideas for Mother’s Day gifts for new mom’s.

 1.  Photo frames to capture forever moments.

Home is where the heart is, where you hang your hat, and where you display moments caught in time. The first year of a child’s life is filled with a multitude of milestones, each one showcasing love and growth.  What better way to display the joy of motherhood than with a precious memory in a custom engraved photo frame.  This distressed frame is an elegant way to frame treasured memories. Frame has an easel back for tabletop display and holds a 10x15cm photograph R39.99

2.   Gifts that pamper

I’ve never met a mother who doesn’t like to feel pampered in some way.  How about Thai Inspired Wellness in Africa Featured in the media as one of the top places to visit in Cape Town, Mai Thai Wellness Spa is a beautiful, unique day spa offering incredible massages; revitalizing facials; luxurious + express mani’s/ pedi’s as well as expert waxing and tinting… 60Min massages range from R550

3.  Every woman needs accessories

A new handbag will always add new life to any wardrobe.  The bags remind me of a different time, of quality hand made leather. The prices have dropped as well and can be found in the Cape Town Store at “I Live Under a Rock”.  Great to pack a nappy or two and a few baby goodies plus your own.

4.  Jewellery

Of course, jewellery will always be one of my favourite Mother’s Day gifts. Nothing compares to  unwrapping a new piece, especially when it’s an item that can be passed down from mother to daughter or daughter-in-law. For example, a Sterling Silver ring as in the image below, is affordable at R152

5.  Home decor

Something special to add to the home, reminding mom all year round of your love and appreciation for her.  We get a real kick out of refreshing new looks for your home. Mr Price home have some inspirational and affordable gifts for Mom this year.

Through and through, motherhood is the most rewarding part of life, and giving a new mom a well thought out gift will be all the more important on her special day. Happy Mother’s Day to all the young and old{er} mothers out there! May this day, and all the days to come be a blessing.

How To Mix And Match Gold And Silver Rings

“gathered articles”

Forget everything you’ve been taught about separating one precious metal from the next. If you want to rock a seriously chic look, load up on rings of different sizes and styles, and don’t be afraid to let silver and gold mingle like the stars they both are.

mixing gold with silver

This is one fashion rule you’ll want to break. Pairing gold and silver is a modern and fresh way to incorporate both metals into your wardrobe. Women and men have been sporting multi-ring looks for a few seasons now and the trend shows no sign of stopping. Kick your look up a notch by following these four tips on how to mix and match gold and silver rings.

Ignore metals but take ring style into account.

You can get away with mixing metals and have the overall look make perfect sense if you stick with the same ring style. In other words: delicate and dainty rings with simple floral, branches, or Celtic designs pair beautifully together, regardless of metal. By the same token, a gold statement ring on your right hand becomes a bigger talking point when you contrast it with a silver statement ring on your left hand.Ignore metals but take ring style into account. Choose rings with both metals.

Kill two birds with one stone by stocking up on silver and gold stacking rings that combine both metals in an effortlessly chic way for you. Trendsetters aren’t afraid of wearing as many stacking rings as their fingers can hold — so experiment with both elegant and funky takes on this look.Choose rings with both metals. Be mindful of your wardrobe.

One way to heighten the drama of gold and silver rings is to present them against an all-black background — wearing head-to-toe black and throwing in a silver chain necklace or large gold hoops throws the spotlight right where it deserves to be: on your accessories. In the summertime, or whenever you crave a little lightness in your life, rock your rings with a breezy white sundress or crisp trousers and silk blouse. Your mixed metals will help give your overall look a sharp, polished feel.anchor accessory 6

Tangled Jewellery

Jewellery Clutter

Today we are tackling jewellery

Our precious accessories often end up lying around everywhere, tangled up in a mess or misplaced.
Unfortunately, those statement necklaces and chunky bracelets don’t always fit in standard jewellery boxes.
This means we need to get creative with storage ideas.

Here are some ways to organise your jewellery and put your baubles and bling on display.

1. Look through your miscellaneous kitchen items and choose an assortment of small dishes,
pretty bowls or teacups to keep your small jewellery in.

2. Use trays of assorted sizes or even sturdy shoe box lids to organise your jewellery.
Place necklaces in one tray, bracelets in another and so on. Stack the trays together
to create a small tower to place on a dresser or insert into a drawer.

3. A paper towel stand is a cheap and simple technique to keep bracelets,
particularly bangles, in one place. Slide one on top of another to create a pretty
decorative on top of a dresser.

4. Mount a short curtain rod to a wall or inside a cupboard and hang scarves and long
necklaces on drapery hooks.

5. Store your jewellery in boxes with clear compartments. This way each piece of jewellery
gets their own space. No more spending hours untangling necklace chains!

Surprising Health Benefits of Silver

Throughout ancient times and history, we have adorned ourselves with jewels and yet their subtle lure remains a mystery. According to folklore and stories throughout history, many gemstones and metals are thought to offer mystic healing powers to its wearer. Royals originally wore gem-studded crowns not only as symbols of wealth and power, but also as protection against ills and evil.

Priests of different religions used gems in rings for similar reasons. Gems exhibit their power in a beneficial or negative way – depending on how they are used. The inherent powers of gemstones and metals are recognized by modern science in the technological uses of crystals in watches, lasers, and computers, but the subtler potencies, such as their ability to promote physical healing in the body, or their power to help balance human emotions, elude modern science.
Sterling Silver has now surpassed gold in its popularity as a metal base for jewellery due to a combination of price, value, and appearance. But its benefits extend beyond affordability and aesthetics.

What does silver do for your health? Silver has numerous health properties that have been used across time and culture. It is a powerful antimicrobial agent that aids in cold and flu prevention, wound healing, and skin care. Silver also helps with internal heat regulation and circulation. When applied in the right quantity and manner, silver also provides protection against harmful electromagnetic radiation from cell phones and other electronics.

How does it work? The benefits of silver are derived from its electrical and thermal conductivity i.e. its ability to generate an electrical field that distributes electricity and heat around the body. Positively-charged silver ions create a conductive field that reflects electromagnetic radiation away from the body, much like a mirror reflects light. This field stimulates the body’s existing conductivity, improving blood circulation, temperature balance, and general healing.
These positively silver ions also bind to negatively charged oxygen receptors in bacteria, destabilizing their metabolic enzymes and causing them to suffocate.

How can you wear silver to reap these benefits? Silver can be worn against the skin, where it is able to interact with your skin’s natural conductivity and provide the most benefits for any potential skin irritations, circulation trouble, or temperature imbalance.

In what situations would it best benefit you to wear silver? Silver is best worn when either the immune system is weak or when the body faces a particularly challenging environment, such as travel, toxic urban environments, or hyper-connected office spaces, where we face heightened exposure to both germs and electronics. Wearing silver rings and bracelets while working on your laptop, for example, will significantly improve your comfort, energy, and immunity by blocking your wrist’s exposure to laptop electrical fields, as well as preventing the spread of office colds.

For those that are skeptical, consider that researchers at the University of Southampton have proven that wearing a specific type of silver ring can help alleviate some symptoms of arthritis in the hands. The benefits include not only helping to reduce pain, but also preventing hyper-extension in the finger joints, which is common in those who suffer from rheumatoid arthritis.

Even for those not willing to buy into the properties of silver as a metal, there is another way to reap health benefits from wearing silver jewellery. In our fast-paced culture, many are turning to meditation, yoga, mindfulness, and other calming techniques to reduce anxiety. Certain types of jewellery can also be worn to help prevent anxiety and re-center. Simple silver “stress rings” or spinner rings, which feature an outer band that spins freely around the inner ring, have been proven to have a calming effect that helps fight anxiety through repetitive motion. Those suffering from anxiety can quietly spin their ring to help combat symptoms even when in a public, crowded space.

A word of caution One brief word of warning — though silver has many proven (and some unproven) health benefits, there are those who are allergic to silver. For these individuals, wearing silver can have the opposite effect, causing a rash or making your skin change colour. If you suffer from a silver allergy, you’ll want to look elsewhere for health benefits in jewellery.

Whether you believe wholeheartedly in all benefits Silver might offer or not entirely, silver jewellery is an aesthetically-pleasing way to calm your mind and increase your overall well-being.

My Sterling Silver tarnished … Why?

Tip Bits

A day doesn’t go by without learning something new, especially today’s social media platform which is filled with shares written by people from all walks of life, all living different experiences with different advice to give.

Because I love jewellery, the lasting beauty and pleasure that it brings, never mind the healing abilities of so many aspects of jewellery…. Oops let me not get side tracked!

I have spent over 25 years of my life professionally and as a hobby involved in all forms of fine jewellery. During this time I have learned many valuable (excuse the pun) tricks of the trade which I think are worth sharing and hopefully you find them as useful as I have.

Over coffee with a friend and colleague last week we discussed sterling silver jewellery. She mentioned that some of her silver turned dark and she can’t manage to return her pieces to their original rich sterling silver colour. I asked her if she wears her jewellery in her home while using cleaning products, and as with most people including myself, I like to wear my jewellery as it is an extension of myself. So yes, she prefers to keep wearing her jewellery even whilst cleaning. Finding this out – the answer to her problem is actually quite simple. Her reaction to the reason of the discoloration of her silver was complete astonishment. Her words were, “Karen, this is a blog post. You need to share this information, I wish I had known this before!”

BLEACH

Yes your common household bleach reacts with sterling silver, oxidizing the surface of the metal. Depending on the length of time submerged and the strength of the bleach, the reactive colour of the bleach on your sterling silver could vary from a light grey to a dark gunmetal grey/black.Bleach

In my experience, the only way to return the colour and shine of your jewellery to its original state, is to have it polished and buffed by your local jeweler.

This oxidizing property of bleach on silver is often used to enhance design on sterling silver jewellery. Once the piece has changed colour the high spots are polished and buffed bringing the surface back to its shiny natural colour. This technique adds a rustic look which adds a beauty of its own.

My friend was grateful for the information and swore never to wear her sterling silver jewellery while working with bleach again.

I hope you have enjoyed this little article and look forward to sharing more useful tip bits with you.

Little Jewellery Tips

Little Jewellery Tips

Do you struggle to fit an earring through the hole in your ear?

Being in the jewellery industry for many years, there are simple things that people can change to make using and wearing their jewellery an easier and more pleasant experience.

This is a common morning scenario …

Little Jewellery Tips

You jump up in the morning after pressing the snooze button (in my case numerous times) and stumble blindly to get ready in a rush.
Your make-up is done, you are dressed and the last thing to do is put your earrings on.
You move closer to the mirror, take your earring and start fumbling in vain pulling your earlobe down to slide the earring in the front hole and the endless wiggle starts!  Stretching your now red earlobe longer and longer till you eventually find the back opening.
Totally flustered and frustrated, you now try to proceed to do the other ear.

Does this sound familiar?

Well, there is a very simple solution!

Even if your hole has been pierced skew. Do NOT pull the earlobe while trying to wiggle the earring through the hole, just hold the earring and gently apply pressure, it will follow the hole through your ear.

Little Jewellery Tips

If the hole at the back has closed slightly, try putting the earring in from the back hole. This will unblock the hole when you try the earring from the front again, it should glide through easily.

I hope these simple tips help simplify your life a little.
Post any questions or if you have great tips to empart, we would love to hear.
